Fashion Friday
/What even is “fashion”? It is defined as": a popular trend, especially in styles of dress (Oxford Dictionary). Fashion shifts with the breeze changes with the seasons, or just because someone in the spotlight decides to try something new or reinvent what has already been. Chasing ‘fashion’ is exhausting and often not the best look for us, if we’re being perfectly honest.
Style, on the other hand, usually refers to how an individual expresses themselves through aesthetic choices such as clothing, accessories, hairstyle, and the way they put an outfit together. (masterclass.com)
I have NEVER been trendy, and when I tried, it was awkward at best. I’ve been a t-shirt and jeans girl my whole life, sprinkled through the years and seasons with tank tops, flannels, cardigans, shackets, jean shorts…. I’d dress up on occasion, but never stray far from what I’m comfortable in. ‘Stylish’ or ‘fashionable’ have never been terms attached to my name…that is, until about seven years ago when a very fashionable friend’s ten-year-old daughter said to me, “I really like your style.”
I was a bit amused, flattered, and dumbfounded. I was in jeans, a tee, and chucks. Reflecting on her comment with my husband later that day he said, “You definitely have a style!” That was the first time I realized I did, in fact, have a “style”. Eclectic as it may be, I tend towards sporty, boho, casual, comfortable styles. I’ve tried through the years to lean into fashion trends but tend to feel like an imposter. So, I stick with what works, for me.
When I started designing shirts, I drew what I wanted to wear. Now that I have the Market Boutique to shop for I keep the same ideals…I’m drawn to what I like, to styles that are less about the most recent trends, and more about what lasts, what can be worn multiple ways, across more than one season. Style that moves and works with the busy lives we lead just makes sense to me.
If you haven’t been to the store or shopped online yet, I hope you will soon!
